Edgewise Energy is working with WATT Fuel Cell Corp (WATT) which has developed an advanced solid oxide, micro-tubular fuel cell configured and sized for residential use. WATT’s fuel cell systems can operate on readily available hydrocarbon fuels such as natural gas and propane. The introduction of this device into the residential sector, coupled with Edgewise Energy’s experience within this market, presents a powerful opportunity to provide reliable site-generated electricity without the limitations of other direct current (DC) systems.
WATT’s tag line, Working All The Time, aptly describes its differentiation from wind and solar in its ability to produce power on demand 24/7. This WATT Fuel Cell System will be fully integrated, with proprietary system compatibility and programming features, into the RESS product creating a unique standalone electricity generation and energy storage device. The system may also be combined with existing and new solar PV or wind systems for the highest level of dependable independence in on-site energy production and management. Launch of the WATT FC product will occur sometime in 2017.
While the initial WATT device will generate electric power with battery storage, the next iteration of the residential product will also incorporate combined heat and power. That is, the device will utilize the unused thermal output of the device to supplement a household’s heating or domestic hot water needs. This added functionality and value would make the WATT one of the most efficient residential energy appliances in the marketplace. Edgewise Energy’s unique cabinet design will accommodate the compact 12kwh-sized WATT Fuel Cell System with the Adara Battery System and may be installed safely in the garage, basement or outside.
